Parole officer shoots at charging pit bull, Linden police say

NEW JERSEY -- Police responded to reports of gunshots fired on Clinton Street just after 7 a.m today and found a state parole officer who said she fired at pit bull that was about to attack her.

At 7:12 a.m. officers received reports of shots fired on the 1800 block of Clinton St., police Capt. James Sarnicki said.

He said officers found a 32-year-old woman who identified herself as a parole officer, and said she just finishing checking on a parolee on a nearby street.

As she was walking back to her car, the woman told police, a tan pit bull came running at her from the rear yard of the house, Sarnicki said.

Believing the dog was going to attack, the woman drew her service weapon and fired one shot at the dog, the captain said. He said the shot missed the dog and hit the ground, and the uninjured dog turned and ran back into the yard.

Officers spoke to the dog owner, Cornel Alston, 72, who told them the dog had been secured in the yard, Sarnicki said. He said Alston was issued a summons for failing to have a dog license.

Linden police detectives went to the scene to investigate the shooting, the captain said.
