Pit bull attacks Joplin girl

MISSOURI -- A stray pit bull attacked an 8-year-old Joplin girl Sunday morning, biting her on both hands, according to a police report.

Robin M. Ellis was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the attack at 9:38 a.m. Sunday behind a residence at 2308 S. Murphy Ave.

Capt. Bob Higginbotham, with the Joplin Police Department, said a city animal control officer determined that the dog got loose by digging a hole beneath a fence at 2224 S. Murphy Ave.

Citations were issued for allowing a dog at large and keeping a vicious animal, he said. But the identity of the person cited was not made clear in the report Higginbotham had available on Monday.
