Bordentown pet groomer charged with animal cruelty in dog death

NEW JERSEY -- The owner of a Bordentown Township pet grooming business has been charged with four counts of animal cruelty in connection with the death of a dog, officials said.

Charges were filed last week by the Burlington County Humane police in connection with the February death of "Harley,'' a 10-year-old Airedale Terrier which suffered an unknown injury while at the Crosswick Clippers pet salon on Crosswicks Road, according to the humane police.

Harley was brought to the salon on Feb. 21 on a leash. The dog's owner returned three hours later and the dog could not stand and had to be physically lifted into the owner's car, police said.

The dog suffered an injury while in the care of the salon and the staff did nothing to help the animal, according to the charges.

"No emergency veterinary service was requested by Crosswick Clippers after the dog suffered an injury while in custody and control of staff at the business," police said.

Armand King, spokesman for the humane police, declined to say what the injury was.

After attempts to rehabilitate Harley were unsuccessful, the dog was euthanized, police said.

Crosswick Clippers is charged with inflicting unnecessary cruelty, failure to provide necessary care, causing bodily injury, and causing the death of a living creature, police said.

Sarah Bruccoleri, owner of the salon, called the charges "meritless,'' and said she would fight them in court. A date has been set for July 22.

"We have never in 10 years had a complaint," Bruccoleri said
