Chardon police say pit bull, bull dog attacked infant

OHIO -- A pit bull and an American bulldog were involved in a fight that left a Chardon infant with serious injuries, police said.

An American Bulldog and an American Staffordshire Terrier -- a type of pit bull -- were involved in the Monday night attack, said Chardon Police Chief Scott Niehus.

The baby's condition was upgraded to stable condition at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, Niehus said. She may be released from the neonatal intensive care unit Wednesday night.

The infant was taken to the hospital from her 23-year-old mother's Court Street home where she was attacked at about 8:30 p.m. Monday, police said. She was sitting on the living room floor when she got caught in the middle of the dog fight.

The dogs bit the girl's head and torso before her mother's 22-year-old boyfriend separated the animals, police said. The mother grabbed her child and ran outside, where a woman who was passing by the house called 911.

The baby was in serious condition after the attack.

The dogs are being quarantined by the Geauga County Dog Warden, Niehus said. They'll be held there for at least 10 days, after which their owners will decide whether to put them down.

The American Bulldog is owned by the mother's stepfather, the chief said. The pit bull belongs to the mother's boyfriend.

Detectives are still putting together the details of the attack. Police will present their findings to a prosecutor, who will decide whether to file charges.

"Because of the severity of the injuries and the gravity of everything that's going on, we're going to have the prosecutor look at the case to make sure we haven't missed anything," Niehus said.
