Deadly pit bull attack worries Avon Lake residents

OHIO -- Residents say they fear for their safety after a recent fight attack between two dogs on a dog by a pit bull left one of the animals dead.

According to police, a pit-bull mix named Cyrus was being walked about 7 p.m. June 18 by his owner on Orchard Park Drive when a corgi-beagle mix named Daisy began barking and running toward Cyrus, who broke free from his harness and killed Daisy during the ensuing fight.

This story isn't quite accurate. Yes, Daisy ran out her front door towards the pit bull which was in the street being walked on a leash by its owner. DAISY NEVER LEFT HER PROPERTY!!!

The pit bull lunged towards Daisy, broke its leash, ran onto the victim's property and mauled Daisy so badly that she had to be euthanized. The pit bull owner FAILED TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OVER HIS DOG.

At a Monday night safety committee meeting, neighbors described a vicious dog fight that left a trail of blood, three people wounded and a trip to the animal hospital that required euthanizing Daisy.

Daisy died because she dared to bark at a pit bull WHILE
STANDING IN HER OWN YARD

Several years ago the state did away with its vicious dog ordinance and Avon Lake followed suit by repealing its own vicious dog ordinance. The Safety Committee, along with the law director and police chief, will now review its dog ordinance to determine how to handle vicious animal attacks.

Daisy’s owner, Johnna Lyman, said her dog jumped in front of her daughter to protect her from Cyrus. All of Daisy’s ribs were crushed and her lungs were punctured during the fight.

“When I think about how devastating it is to lose our dog it’s more devastating to think about losing my daughter,” she said. “Thank God my dog jumped in front of her or we’d be here for a different reason.”

The owners of Cyrus, Earl Hall and Kimberly Larson, said they don’t believe their dog is a threat to the neighborhood. Larson was cited for animal at large, pleaded no contest in Avon Lake Municipal Court and paid a $150 fine after the incident.

Hall and Larson didn’t attend Monday night’s meeting, but they said there are two sides to the story.

They were in their front yard Monday evening with Cyrus, who now wears a muzzle.

“Their dog charged at my dog and Cyrus was just protecting me,” Larson said.

Hall adopted Cyrus from a humane society and he denied the claims of his neighbors, who said Cyrus was used by previous owners in dog fights as a “bait dog.” Bait dogs are used in illegal dog fighting rings to test a fighting dog’s instinct. Many bait dogs are mauled or killed in the process.

Humane societies and shelters LOVE to dump pit bulls into society. A pit bull adopted from a shelter does NOT mean it's a good dog.

“There are no reports of him having any other altercations,” Hall said. “He’s an awesome dog. He felt threatened and was doing his job to protect.”

During Monday night’s meeting it was said the Lymans weren’t informed of Larson’s court date, but Hall and Larson said the Lymans’ daughter was in court and the judge asked her if she wanted to speak.

Neighbors have circulated a petition to have Cyrus labeled as a vicious dog and want appropriate action to ensure he doesn’t hurt another dog or person in the future.

Hall said the whole incident is extremely unfortunate, but he doesn’t believe Cyrus is vicious just because he killed another dog during a fight.

“They’re going around spooking the neighborhood about a vicious dog,” Hall said. “They can knock on our door anytime and meet Cyrus. He’s not a vicious dog.”

Multiple neighbors said they now avoid walking near Larson and Hall’s home for fear that Cyrus will attack again, worried that next time it will be a child. One neighbor said 40 percent of people in the neighborhood own dogs, but this is the first instance in which a dog has killed another dog.
