George Loy, 60, gets four months in jail for starving his dog

MICHIGAN -- A judge has ordered a Clare County man to four months in jail for abandoning/cruelty to animals.

Chief Circuit Judge Thomas R. Evans also sentenced George Wayne Loy, 60, to two years of probation, 150 hours of community service and to pay $2,816 in restitution to the Clare Animal Hospital.

Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis said a jury on Friday found Loy guilty of abandoning/cruelty to two or three animals.

Four veterinarians testified that several dogs owned by Loy were severely malnourished and suffered from a variety of ailments related to worms, fleas and mites, Ambrozaitis said.

Much of the evidence presented included images of six dogs and medical reports written by veterinarians, she said.

“This conviction was the result of efforts of Clare County Animal Control and the doctors who treated these innocent animals,” Ambrozaitis said. “By using visual trial techniques taught by the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan, we were able to bring home the tragic effects of Mr. Loy’s criminal neglect of his dogs.

In sentencing Loy, Evans prohibited him from owning any pets, livestock or and other animals during his probation period.

“The costs of treating these animals will rightfully be borne by Mr. Loy,” Ambrozaitis said.
