Guyana: Elderly woman viciously attacked by her neighbor's Pit Bull; dog has to be beaten repeatedly with a piece of wood to stop attacking

GUYANA -- A lone bystander, had to come to the aid of a woman, as she was being attacked by a pit bull.

Desiree Griffith, 58, of lot 84 Doctor Charles Estate, Soesdyke was bitten on the back of her ankle, arms and back after a pit bull escaped from a wooden pen in which it was housed.

She was saved from further injuries when a passerby went to her rescue. The person also vented anger on the pit bull and other dogs that were on the road at the said time.

Kaieteur News understands that Ms. Griffith was heading out to the main road to have an afternoon chat with her friend at around 02:30 hrs Saturday when the dog, which had escaped from its pen, pounced on her.


According to reports, neighbor told Kaieteur News that they heard Ms. Griffith’s screams and then saw the animal attacking her as she laid helplessly on the ground.

“She was trying to escape but it clung to her right foot,” they recalled.

The animal only released the victim after it was beaten about the body by a passerby who was armed with a piece of wood.

The injured woman was rushed to a city hospital where she was treated and discharged. A Medical Certificate was also prepared by Doctors.

Desiree Griffith has been bedridden since the incident. She is currently at home but cannot move her arms neither her right foot.

The owner of the pit bull who lives a few houses away from Griffith is refusing to talk about the incident.

A report has been made at the Timehri Police Station but according to the victim’s daughter the owner of the pet has since been released from custody.

“No action has been taken”, said the woman’s daughter during a telephone interview.

Residents believe that the attack would have been fatal had the passerby not rushed immediately to Ms. Griffith’s aid.

Meanwhile, a concerned citizen lamented that he is concerned since the animal is still there and he is scared that attacks will be repeated.
