NEW YORK -- A Long Island woman faces animal cruelty charges after a pit bull she owned died from complications of starvation, reports cbslocal.com.
Madison Cammarata, 22, was charged on Sunday with misdemeanor animal cruelty, announced Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross. Duncan, her seven-year-old pit bull, died after his body became septic as the result of the foreign objects in his abdomen and intestinal tract.
Cammarata had surrendered the dog in May to the rescue group Guardians of Rescue, after a neighbor called the organization about a dog who looked like a walking skeleton.
The dog weighed 47 pounds on a starved frame that should have easily tipped the scales to at least 80 pounds. Any how did Duncan survive? The dog ate rocks and anything else he could fine, just to stop the pain in his stomach from the abject starvation. Veterinarians did everything they could to save Duncan's life.
During surgery, vets found the following in Duncan's abdomen:
"He pulled 3 pairs of underwear, pieces of other pairs, 2 rocks, the vertebrae of a small animal, and twine and string from his small intestine. Both Dr. Rose brothers who have over 30 years of experience, agreed this is the most distended they have ever seen a small intestinal tract get..."
Cammarata is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Central Islip on September 17.
