OREGON -- A rural Jackson County woman faces felony animal neglect charges involving more than 40 animals, including dogs and a parrot.
A Jackson County grand jury indicted Vanessa Hughes on six counts of second-degree animal neglect on June 24. The indictment alleges she failed to provide minimum care for dozens of animals.
Hughes, 41, was arraigned on the charges Thursday and has a pre-trial conference scheduled for Aug. 24.
The animal neglect allegedly occurred on or between Dec. 31, 2014, and Jan. 28.
The allegedly neglected animals included dogs named Abby, Bobby, Jackpot, Annie Hall and Allen Oscar, as well as a blue and gold macaw parrot named B.Q., the indictment said.
Hughes lives in the 4700 block of Highway 238 between Jacksonville and Ruch, according to court records.
Neither she nor her attorney immediately returned phone calls for comment.
Hughes was processed through the Jackson County Jail and released on her own recognizance under the stipulation that she procure no more animals until the case is resolved.
