Pit bull attacks, kills 6-year-old in Western NC

NORTH CAROLINA -- A pit bull attacked and killed a 6-year-old child Tuesday afternoon, according to the Henderson County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said a 911 call came from a home on Piney Ridge Drive, and crews were sent to the home at about 4:15 p.m.

Sheriff's office spokesman Frank Stout said deputies and emergency service workers were unable to reach the child because of the pit bull's aggressive behavior.

Deputies said they had to shoot the dog, but Stout said, it was too late to save the child.

He said emergency responders pushed down a fence to get to the 6-year-old child, who did not respond to medical treatment.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
