OHIO -- A 9-year-old girl is recovering at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center after a dog attack in her neighbor's backyard.
Sherry Feltner lives next door to the victim's home in the 100 block of Ramsey Drive in West Hamilton.
Feltner told WLWT News 5 her daughter and son were playing outside with the neighbors' children when her sister-in-law's dog Scrappy, a 2-year-old Staffordshire Terrier, attacked the 9-year-old.
"I guess she got too close to him and he jumped up and got a hold of her face and took off some of her nose and a big chunk of her lip," Feltner said. "She was gushing blood so I ripped off my shirt to stop the bleeding."
Feltner was inside with her husband during the attack but said her son and daughter saw it happen near the kiddie pool in the backyard where Scrappy was chained up.
"He's been fine around kids but this is, I don't know what happened, what set him off and it's just scary, I feel bad for the family," Feltner said.
The Hamilton Police Department said it did not respond to the call but a medic took the girl to Fort Hamilton Hospital where she was flown to Children's Hospital in stable condition.
A member of the Feltner family told WLWT the victim was in surgery around 7 p.m. and the dog had been taken to the owner's mother's house.
The family also said Scrappy is properly licensed and registered in the county and was told by the medic animal control has 48 hours to take action on the dog.
