Zachary Burkenbine and Krystal Bohannon kicked small dog to death, harassed the witness who called 911

OREGON -- A man, who said he found a dog in a box marked “Free,” was arrested after allegedly kicking the dog so badly it had to be euthanized.

A witness saw a man kicking a small dog along the side of SE 82nd Drive in Clackamas before getting on a bus with the dog toward Gladstone. The witness called 911, and officers tracked the man and a woman he was with to the Safeway parking lot.

The couple, identified as Zachary Burkenbine and Krystal Bohannon, told deputies they found the dog on Friday on the side of a road in a box. Officials said Burkenbine told them he was trying to train the dog to walk on a leash.

The small white mixed-breed dog had blood dripping from its tail. A deputy took the dog to a veterinary clinic, and staff said the injuries were so severe the dog was put down.

When the witness called 911, investigators said they later learned, Bohannon hit the caller’s car, mooned the caller and made obscene gestures. She faces at least a second-degree disorderly conduct charge.

Burkenbine, though, faces a felony charge of 1st-degree aggravated animal abuse. He’s being held in the Clackamas County Jail.

Authorities also said he initially identified himself as Zandin Burkenbine, his brother. It was later determined his real name is Zachary.
