12x conviced criminal, Liam Dowling, walked free from court after killing Jack Russell by smashing it into ground 30 times in front of children at park

UNITED KINGDOM -- Liam Dowling walked free from court after killing the animal - he has 12 previous convictions, including a four-and-a-half year sentence for a drugs offence

A thug who beat a harmless dog to death after swinging it over his head by the lead in a park full of children has avoided jail.

Animal charities are fuming after brutal Liam Dowling walked free after he smashed the Jack Russell into the ground up to 30 times.

The 44-year-old was also seen putting his foot on the dog’s head while it was on the ground and pulling the lead tight.

Then he dumped the body in bushes in Dublin, report the Irish Mirror.

Dowling pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to killing the pet on August 19 last year.
He has 12 previous convictions, including a four-and-a-half year sentence for a drugs offence.

The judge said he intends to impose 200 hours of community service in lieu of a two-year sentence if Dowling is suitable.

Speaking after yesterday's outcome, the DSPCA said it was in "utter disbelief" at the leniency of the sentence applied.

A statement read: "Our inspectors have seldom seen such blatant cruelty to an animal perpetrated in full view of children and parents in a public park.

"The DSPCA are calling for the full implementation of the penalties under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 in this brutal and horrific case of animal cruelty.

"Given that this animal was a family pet, we are also at a loss to understand why a lifetime ban on the ownership of animals has not been imposed on this individual.

"We have written to the Director of Public Prosecutions requesting that the leniency of the sentence in this case be appealed."
