FLORIDA -- Brevard County deputies arrested a woman they say had nearly two dozen cats in a storage unit with "deplorable" conditions.
Amy Lynn Dvorak, 43, of Merritt Island, was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty on Thursday.
Deputies said employees of a self-storage business on Amsdell Road reported a foul odor and cats being held in the storage unit.
When deputies arrived, they found 23 cats in the unit, covered with feces and urine, without proper air conditioning, ventilation or food, according to the report.
"... With the many resources available in our area, there is no legitimate excuse for the hoarding of pets or maltreatment of animals that puts them at risk of suffering or death," said Sheriff Wayne Ivey.
"In this particular case there was no air conditioning, ventilation, or food for these helpless animals and that is 100 percent unacceptable to me, our team, and the community we serve.”
The cats were taken to the Animal Care center to be evaluated.
Dvorak was taken to Brevard County Jail on $57,000 bond.
