Carlos Jose Fernandez sentenced in West El Paso animal cruelty case

TEXAS -- A 61-year-old man pleaded guilty and was sentenced Friday in connection with animal cruelty after two dogs were found injured at his West El Paso home, according to court records.

Carlos Jose Fernandez was sentenced to six months in jail on a charge of cruelty to non-livestock animals, according to court records.

Fernandez was arrested in December 2014 after police found two injured dogs within four months at his home in the 1000 block of Mesita Drive, police said.

El Paso police were called to Fernandez's West El Paso home in September 2014 after receiving a report of an injured dog, officials said. Officers found a pit bull with injuries that were consistent with animal cruelty, officials said.

Police were again called to Fernandez's home in December 2014 in connection with reports of an injured 3-month-old German shepherd, officials said.

According to police, Fernandez had taken the German shepherd onto the roof of his home and the dog fell off. The German shepherd suffered several injuries from the fall, police said.

Fernandez was facing two other counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals, but both charges were dismissed.

Fernandez is currently in jail serving two years after he pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated for the third time or more, according to court and jail records.

The six-month sentence imposed on the cruelty to animals charge will be served concurrently with his sentence for the driving while intoxicated charge, according to court records.
