ALABAMA -- A Dothan woman faces an animal cruelty charge after Dothan police learned she had left her Chihuahua inside a hot vehicle for over an hour on Tuesday while she shopped at Wiregrass Commons Mall.
Dothan Police Capt. Stacy Robinson confirmed police officers arrested Felisa Denise Ferguson, 37, of Houston County Road 203, and charged her with misdemeanor animal cruelty.
Robinson said in an email that police were called to Wiregrass Commons Mall around 6 p.m. Tuesday in response to a complaint about a dog locked inside a vehicle.
When officers arrived they found a small breed dog inside the vehicle with no owner in sight.
Officers entered the vehicle and officers with the Dothan Police Animal Services Division responded to the mall and took the dog into custody.
Robinson identified the dog as a Chihuahua, and said the dog was not seriously injured.
“We think the officers got to him in time, and he is recovering,” Robinson said.
The owner of the vehicle, Ferguson, returned to her car around 7 p.m. and told police the dog was left in the car since around 5 p.m. while she shopped in the mall.
Robinson said the Chihuahua was taken to the Dothan Animal Shelter.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida, the temperatures in Dothan reached 99 degrees Tuesday.
Ferguson was booked into the Dothan City Jail Tuesday night on the animal cruelty charge and several alias warrants for her arrest. She was later released from custody on a signature bond.
