Cory Muckle arrested for animal cruelty after dog's paws burned on hike

ARIZONA -- A Tucson man has been arrested after his dog's paws were severely burned during a hike.

It happened Monday at Tanque Verde Falls in Redington Pass, a high mountain pass east of Tucson.

A group of hikers called 911 at about 5:30 p.m. regarding the dog, who was unable to stand on his own. The temperature at the time of the call was 100 degrees.

The dog, named Ranger, was found to be lethargic, with bloody paws and he couldn't stand or walk.

Volunteers from the Southern Arizona Rescue Association had to carry out Ranger from three miles up the trail. It took rescuers more than five hours to bring the dog to safety in a stokes basket.

Cory Muckle, 21, was charged with felony cruelty to animals.

Rescuers want to remind pet owners that animals are susceptible to the extreme heat, just like humans. Precautions must be taken if you are going to leave your pets outside or take them with you while doing outdoor activities.
