CANADA -- An Oshawa resident is applauding Durham police for acting quickly to rescue a dog locked in a car at the Costco plaza.
Robert Bell said he was headed to the Costco on Ritson Road North to grab a cold drink shortly after 3:30 p.m. because it was sweltering outside. He saw several people standing around a parked car which had a French bulldog inside. All of the car’s windows were rolled up.
“They told me it had been 15 or 20 minutes, they sent someone in to talk to Costco, the Costco guys came out and I said you have to call the police,” said Mr. Bell. “So I called 911 and explained it’s a dog in a car.”
According to weather reports it was at least 24 degrees C (75 degrees F) in Oshawa on Friday and felt several degrees warmer.
“At first it was barking around a lot but then it got quiet, and sort of curled up which didn’t look good,” explained Mr. Bell. “The police came immediately.”
One of the officers used a baton to open the back passenger-side window of the vehicle allowing the door to be opened and the dog was provided with water as officers waited for the dog’s owners to arrive. Mr. Bell said officers spoke to the dog’s owners.
On Friday afternoon, DRPS officials say they didn’t have a report on the incident yet and couldn’t say whether there were charges related to the incident.
Mr. Bell said Durham police officers handled the situation well.
“It was very good, the guy you could tell cared, handled it quietly. I was impressed.”
