Horses discovered with three-foot long hooves after 15 years of neglect

UPDATE: Robert Baugher and Christine Baugher charged with animal cruelty after emaciated horses with overgrown hooves found

MARYLAND -- This heartbreaking footage shows a neglected horse whose hooves had grown three-foot long attempting to walk.

The horse, named Quest, was discovered along with two others inside a squalid stable piled high with manure.

It is believed they were neglected for at least 15 years without receiving medical care.

The two stallions and a mare - one of which had to be put down - were found emaciated, their ribs clearly visible and their manes long and tangled.

Shocking photographs of the horses showed how their hooves had continued growing and curled in on themselves.

One horse, named Piper, was suffering from ruptured ligaments and had to be euthanized.

The two surviving horses, named by the rescuers as Quest and Rio, were sedated in order for vets to be able to cut their hooves.

They are now being cared for by staff at charity at Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Maryland, US.
The charity said it appeared that the horses had been locked in the stable without medical care for 15 years, in the worst case of neglect the group had ever seen.

The owners could now face animal cruelty charges after the horses were rescued from a property in Washington County on Friday.

A spokesman for Days End Farm Horse Rescue said: "The investigation is ongoing and cruelty charges could be pending.

"Of the over 3,000 horses DEFHR has rescued in its 26-year history, these are the worst, most extreme cases of hoof neglect the organization has ever seen."
