KENTUCKY -- A man has been charged with animal cruelty about two weeks after authorities found a severely emaciated puppy near a dumpster at an apartment complex.
Eugene "Geno Floyd" is facing second-degree animal cruelty charges, a misdemeanor. Floyd was not arrested; officials say a criminal complaint was filed with the Jessamine District Court.
Floyd told authorities he was busy with work and forgot to feed the dog. He turned the animal loose in hopes that someone would find it and pick it up, Jessamine County Director of Public Services Mike Cassidy said.
"He didn’t tell us he physically withheld food. His statement was that he worked long hours and didn’t have time for the animal," Cassidy said. “He did say the animal was owned by him and he was responsible for the animal’s condition.”
The 6-month-old puppy, which does not have a name, was found on July 29. When she was brought into Jessamine County Animal Shelter, she was emaciated and near death.
She weighed 11 pounds, about half the weight she should be, but in just a few weeks time she has made a complete turn around. As of Friday morning, she weighed about 24 pounds.
“She’s doing great -- starting to act like a puppy now," Cassidy said. "When she first came in she could barely stand. Now she’s playing and starting to romp a little bit.”
Shelter officials say they have been inundated with requests to adopt the dog. A contest could be held to give her a name.
Floyd could face a $500 fine and up to one year in jail.
