AUSTRALIA -- A man has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly kicking a Chihuahua to death in the NSW Hunter Valley.
Police will allege 22-year-old Nathan Thomas Merchant kicked the head of his partner Saragrace Dow’s seven-year-old dog Toby at their home in Cessnock on Friday.
The woman’s mother Jennifer told the Daily Telegraph her daughter had developed a special bond with Toby.
“She had gone around the corner to pick up some KFC when he called,” Mrs Dow said.
“He kept saying ‘I f...ed up, I f...ed up, and then ‘we can fix this we can fix this’,” she said.
Mrs Dow said her daughter returned home to find Toby dead in the bathroom and “blood everywhere”.
“She called me absolutely distraught. When we arrived she had him wrapped in a blanket. He had cleaned up a lot of the blood but there were still specks of it around.
“That little dog was her lifesaver after she found her father dead eight years ago.”
A text message sent by Mr Merchant, from Kurri Kurri, after the incident shows him claiming he did not mean to kill Toby.
“That dog drove me nuts but that dog ment (sic) a s..t load to her and it wasn’t on purpose it went to bite me so I gave it a little kick and its head hit the table.”
The Telegraph has seen an autopsy performed on Toby which found he died of “mutiple depressed skull fractures and a fractured right mandible”.
“Death is consistent and likely due to blunt force trauma”?
He is expected to appear in Cessnock Local Court on 9 September 2015.
