MINNESOTA -- An Austin woman is without her dog after the city has taken it away. And for most dog owners, they know your dog becomes part of the family, making this difficult for Sofia Smith.
Sofia has a four-year-old pit bull named Roc, and Roc has a tendency to get loose.
“He went up to a guy and jumped on him,” Sofia started to explain about the last time Roc had ran away.
She says a young child she was watching opened the door, letting the dog out; and a man says he was attacked by Roc.
“He actually didn’t bite this man, and he has not actually bitten anyone,” Sofia said.
So that makes a difference. Search YouTube for dog attacks - many don't show the dog actually biting the person but they're still terrifying.
Sofia claims Roc is a gentle dog and would not maliciously hurt anyone. But this is not the first time Roc has gotten loose causing problems for the city, causing the city council to make the decision to label Roc ‘dangerous’, and soon have to put him down.
“It’s a hard decision. At the same time, where would we be if this dog has hurt somebody? There were four incidents with this dog. I was told by police there were other incidents that didn’t require a report, or for some reason a report wasn’t made,” Mayor Tom Stiehm said. “So of the ones that we had to deal with, this is one of the most extreme case, so unfortunately it’s an action we have to take,” Mayor Stiehm added.
Though both sides can’t agree, Sofia is not giving up. Fighting and pleading for alternatives for part of her family.
“It’s hard because he doesn’t know why he’s there. And he thinks that we abandoned him, so that’s hard,” Sofia said as she started tearing up, “I just don’t want him to die. So if he can go and be trained properly, the training I couldn’t afford to get him. I think that would be best. If that what they want I’m okay with it; I just don’t want him to die,” she said.
Why didn't she get the training after the 1ST INCIDENT? Why didn't she get the training after the 2ND INCIDENT? Why didn't she get the training after the 3RD INCIDENT? Why didn't she get the training after the 4TH INCIDENT?!
August 17 is set for Roc to be put down. If you’d like to help, or talk with Sofia about the incident; a group of supporters are meeting outside Austin’s City Hall Tuesday. She asks to wear red, and make signs if you’d like.
