Police say puppy found dead in locked NJ car 'melted' from the heat

NEW JERSEY -- A Rottweiler puppy that was left to die in the truck of a locked car in New Jersey melted to death, authorities said.

The 7-month-old pup, Luna, was discovered in the trunk of the vehicle at Generation X Towing in Patterson late Saturday and officials believe the dog was intentionally left there to die.

“No animal should die the way that dog died,” Paterson Animal Control Officer John DeCando told NJ.com.

“Dogs feel — just like we do. Whoever did it was a very evil person.”

The dog was missing for three days before being found in the trunk, where it had melted to death, according to NBC.

Alvin Castro, Luna’s owner and also the company owner, said the pup was last seen playing with another dog in the yard on Washington Ave.

When he noticed the dog was missing, he went to the city shelter to see if Luna had been found.

Police called him at 10 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a strong odor coming from one of the cars being repaired at his business.

Luna was found dead inside.

"I couldn't believe it. I just can't believe how it happened," said Castro.

Surveillance cameras across the street are not working, authorities said, and there are no suspects as yet.

Paterson Animal Control and the Passaic County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are assisting local police in investigating Luna’s death.
