Reward Offered For Info In Chestertown Cat Attack

NEW YORK -- The New York State Humane Association, headquartered in Kingston, is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for inflicting fatal injuries upon a family cat.

The incident occurred on or about July 2 in Chestertown in the vicinity of Foster Flats Road.

It appears that the cat was intentionally struck in the head by a two by four or similar object.  A veterinary exam determined that the cat had a broken jaw and skull fracture and had to be euthanized.

It was ruled out that the injuries were from being hit by a car or other accident but rather that they were intentionally inflicted, likely by a right handed individual.

The individual(s) responsible for this brutal attack must be brought to justice.  Intentionally violent attacks on companion animals are felonies and can result in up to two years in jail along with a substantial fine.  Anyone with information on this crime should contact the Warren County Sheriff’s Office at 743-2500.

In New York State, aggravated cruelty to animals, §353-a, Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, is a felony, punishable by a term in state prison.

A person is guilty of aggravated cruelty to animals when, with no justifiable purpose, he or she intentionally kills or intentionally causes serious physical injury to a companion animal with aggravated cruelty.

For purposes of this section, “aggravated cruelty” shall mean conduct which: (i) is intended to cause extreme physical pain; or (ii) is done or carried out in an especially depraved or sadistic manner.

The New York State Humane Association has conducted animal cruelty investigation workshops for police and humane investigators throughout the state for the past 15 years and recently held one at the NYS Police Academy in Albany.  NYSHA has offered rewards in the past to assist in law enforcement investigations.
