New Mexico: Alex Alirez, owner of "Hubble" has had troubled past with animal cruelty

NEW MEXICO -- Earlier this month, Las Vegas Police were called to a home where they found the dog, Hubble, nearly starving to death.

Since then, he was kept and cared for at a dog rescue in Rio Rancho. Despite all the efforts to save Hubble, he died on Wednesday.

“If you have an animal, and you cant take care of them, give them up, let someone who can take care of them, take care of them,” said Rick Rubio.

Thursday, Las Vegas police arrested Hubble’s owner, Alex Alirez, who is now charged with extreme animal cruelty.

KRQE News 13 found out this wasn’t the first time Alirez has been involved with animal cruelty.

In a police report dating back to 2009, Alirez had a dog that attacked another dog in the same Las Vegas neighborhood. A neighbor was attacked too. It describes the dog as terrorizing.

This isn’t sitting well with the Las Vegas community.

“I’m very uncomfortable with that person being in this vicinity,” said Gilbert Lopez.

“Having a person like that, he puts us not only as dog owners, but everyone in the spot light, but he also puts the younger generation at risk,” said Lopez.

The community hopes Alirez’s case will be the last to tell so they can finally get back their good name.

“It gives as a bad name because the rest of the vicinity looks at us, and says, ‘oh they have dogs, their dogs are vicious, they’re going to attack,’ and it’s not like that with most of us,” said Lopez.
