Deputies were called to the 400 block of Pamela Road about 4:30 p.m. Friday, where a man told them he saw an older red pickup going down the road with a dog dragging behind the vehicle, according to a sheriff’s report. The man tried unsuccessfully to get the driver to stop, and chased the truck until he lost sight of it near Kelly Road, west of York.
The dog’s owner, who lives on Pamela Road, arrived and told deputies he had been inside taking a nap and his son had taken the dog outside for a walk, deputies said. The owner said his friend from work, William Christopher White, 26, was also at the home and was “trying to get gas to put in his truck.”
The son asked White to hold the leash while he left to find a funnel, the report states. When the son returned, William and the dog were both gone.
The owner said he received a phone call from someone about a neighbor seeing the dog being dragged down the road behind the truck, deputies said. The caller asked if the dog was OK.
Deputies followed a trail of blood starting from Kelly Road that continued onto S.C. 49 and then onto the U.S. 321 Bypass. The trail continued onto Turner Avenue and ended in a small grass alley.
While there, deputies heard the dog’s owner yelling at someone on the phone and asking where his dog was, the report says. The owner approached the officers and said White told him his dog was in a gully just off California Road, a dirt road. The dog’s body was found in a gully on the 1700 block of California Road, and burnout tracks were found nearby.
A pickup matching the description of the one seen dragging the dog was parked outside White’s home when deputies arrived. Before they could finish reading White his Miranda rights, he told them “he killed his best friend’s dog and to just take him to jail,” the report states.
White admitted to tying the dog’s leash to his trailer hitch and driving to a friend’s home off the U.S. 321 bypass, deputies said. He then put the dog in his truck and drove to California Road, where he tried to dispose of the dog’s body. He didn’t give a reason for the killing.
When asked why he tried to cover up his actions instead of calling his friend to explain what happened, White said he was nervous and “didn’t know how to explain” to the owner that he killed his dog, deputies said. He said he didn’t know why the blood trail appeared to swerve into the left side of the road at times.
White contacted The Herald Tuesday morning and said the entire thing was an accident. He said he tied the dog to the trailer hitch while he walked to a neighbor’s house to get a funnel, but that neighbor was upset after a recent burglary and shouted at White to get off his property.
“I walked back and was mad,” White said, adding that in a fit of anger, he cut open a bottle to use as a funnel, gassed up his truck and left. “I get the gas in there, I hop in the truck and leave. I didn’t see the dog, I didn’t hear the dog.”
White was charged with animal cruelty. He was placed in the York County Detention Center and later released on bond.
