Pit bull jumps 6-foot fence, attacks 9-year-old Birmingham boy

ALABAMA -- A 9-year-old Birmingham boy was hospitalized after he was attacked by a pit bull in Ensley this afternoon.

The victim and another child were playing in their backyard in the 1500 block of 42nd Street about 4:30 p.m. when the dog jumped over a 6-foot fence and attacked the boy, said Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards.

The boy's mother heard her son's screams and tried to help him. Two other neighbors also came to his rescue. One of the neighbors shot the dog twice, and the other struck the dog with a bat, Edwards said.

In the video clip, the neighbor says he beat the dog "6 or 7 times" with the Louisville Slugger and it had no effect. He finally managed to hit the dog on the nose and that's when it let go of the little boy, but was still "circling him". Remember, that's what pit bull fighters call 'gameness'. The dog is injured and seemingly in pain, but still wants the fight/attack.

The dog finally stopped attacking. The boy was taken to Children's of Alabama, where he is expected to survive.

"Our officer spoke with the child at the hospital, and he appears to be doing fine,'' Edwards said.

The dog was still alive when taken from the scene by animal control officers. The owner of the dog has not yet been located. The investigation is ongoing.
