Rottweiler bites girl, 6; owner may euthanize it

MICHIGAN -- A woman living on the 300 block of Princeton off Nine Mile Road in South Lyon told police she was considering euthanizing her 130-pound dog after it bit a 6-year-old Novi girl’s ear Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to the home shortly after 1 p.m. on a complaint of a dog bite. The officer found the girl, bleeding from her ear, and her mom sitting on the front porch. The mom said the child was visiting a friend, and the two girls were practicing hand stands inside. The dog, a Rottweiler, apparently came up to the girl and bit her left ear.

The homeowner then grabbed the dog and locked it in a bathroom.

The victim’s mom said she noticed a piece of skin from the girl’s ear was pulled off and in her hair.

A police report stated the homeowner admitted to the officer her dog bit the child, but added the dog normally was not aggressive and likely was trying to protect her own daughter, thinking the friend was trying to kick her.

Yes, let's try to find a way to blame the victim and say they provoked the dog into attacking.

She apparently said she was thinking of euthanizing the dog because of the incident.

The dog was licensed through Oakland County and was up to date on vaccines. Police noted a check on the animal indicated three different incidents with the dog being vicious. Officers planned to follow up Wednesday to see if the animal was put down.

Huron Valley Ambulance and South Lyon Fire personnel treated the girl at the scene.
