WYOMING -- A 21-year-old Wright man has been arrested on a felony charge of animal cruelty.
Kim Jones with the Campbell County Sheriff's office said the investigation began on March 5th, 2015.
Investigator Jones said the suspect, Giovanni Santos called the Animal Medical Center about 6 a.m. and said he believed his 14-week-old pit bull had been injured after being attacked by another dog.
The man requested advice on how to treat the puppy at home, saying he could not afford vet bills.
The man brought in the puppy about 10 a.m. that day. Jones said the Gillette Police Department was contacted because the man was highly intoxicated. He was arrested for driving while under the influence.
Experts said the puppy's injuries were not consistent with an animal attack, and there was a very high probability the injuries were intentionally inflicted.
The puppy had several injuries including periorbital swelling to the left eye, hemorrhaging in the left eye, bruising to the abdomen, a broken rib and extensive internal bleeding. The puppy died that night from the injuries.
Jones said the man has a history of animal cruelty. Jones said Santos was convicted of severely beating a dachshund puppy in Wright last year.
