Houston-area toddler suffers stroke after dog attack in Louisiana

TEXAS -- A 17-month-old girl from the Katy area is recuperating at Texas Children's Hospital after suffering traumatic injuries from a dog bite.

Kinley Golden was at the home of relatives in Louisiana on Oct. 10, when a dog attacked her, fracturing her skull, according to a gofundme page set up to help pay for her medical expenses.
Due to the trauma, the little girl also had a stroke, the gofundme page stated.

By Monday, she was no longer in the pediatric intensive care unit and had begun physical therapy, a family friend, Stefani Gordon, said by email. Although she doesn't have much appetite, she fed herself some applesauce and brushed her teeth on Sunday, Gordon said.

"She is saying 'No' and gave a good smile yesterday," Gordon wrote.

Kinley is doing well, but infection from the bite is still a concern, Gordon's email stated.

Kinley is the youngest of five children, whose parents both work full time, according to gofundme. In addition to the cost of her treatment, the family has also incurred the expense of transporting her back to Houston from Shreveport, where she received initial treatment.

According to KTRK, the dog, which belongs to Kinley's grandparents, is normally gentle and well behaved. In this case, however, the Springer spaniel bit the child's head and wouldn't let go, the station reported.

Kinley's father, Jeremy Golden, had to resort to biting the dog to get it off his daughter, KTRK said.

Jeremy Golden happens to be a nurse who works in a Houston-area intensive care unit and knew to keep pressure on the bleeding wound while taking her to meet an ambulance crew, KTRK said.
