McCracken County man and his Dachshund injured in pit bull attack

KENTUCKY -- A Farley man needed surgery on his right arm after he was attacked by two dogs Sunday afternoon, according to the McCracken County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies say 75-year-old Herbert Brown was in his yard with his dog, a Dachshund, when two larger dogs came into the yard and attacked Brown's dog.

Brown and a witness told deputies one of the larger dogs grabbed the Dachshund by the neck and started shaking it. Brown went to stop the dog, and it bit his right forearm.

Brown suffered multiple cuts, a large laceration and a broken finger while trying to free his dog.
Deputies say a neighbor came to Brown's aid and was able to free his arm.

The neighbor helped Brown and his dog get to safety. Deputies and an animal control officer found the dogs, and several attempts were made to capture them.

Deputies say one of the dogs tried to attack the animal control officer, and a deputy shot and killed the dog to prevent anyone else from being bitten.

The other dog was captured by its owner's family. The owner was cited by animal control for harboring a vicious animal. Brown was taken to Baptist Health Paducah, and deputies were told he would need surgery on his arm.
