NEW YORK -- Despite extreme measures taken recently to save its life, a horse in Tioga County has died.
The Tioga County Sheriff's Office says the animal's body was too damaged, and his heart too strained, after years of neglect. It died on Saturday.
The horse, named Mooney, was emaciated, dehydrated and confined in a small area when a deputy found him at a home in the town of Barton in August. At that time, deputies said Mooney was 300 pounds underweight.
The horse was removed and taken to a foster home in Spencer where he died despite efforts to restore his health.
According to the sheriff's office, Mooney's former owners, Paul Jordan and Jody Holmes, were charged with overdriving, torturing and injuring animals, plus failure to provide proper sustenance.
