Officer shoots pit bull after family attacked, police say

PENNSYLVANIA -- Harrisburg police shot and killed a pit bull in Wildwood Park Saturday after the loose dog bit three members of a family.

A mother, father and child were bitten by the pit bill in the incident about 12:45 p.m. Saturday at the park at 100 Wildwood Way. Police did not release the age of the child.

Two victims were bitten on their hands and one victim was bitten in the buttock, said police Capt. Gabriel Olivera.

When an officer arrived, a woman was trying to use a rope to restrain the dog. The dog broke free and charged menacingly at the officer, who shot the dog several times.

The dog's carcass was taken to the agricultural building, where it prepared for rabies testing. Test results will take 10 days, Olivera said.

Detectives were still trying to determine if the woman at the park who was trying to restrain the dog was the dog's legal owner.
