CALIFORNIA -- A Chico woman Wednesday was granted probation with 180 days in jail for threatening to kill her boyfriend’s mother and the mother’s Chihuahua, the Butte County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Defendant Angelina Fred, 30, was sentenced in Butte County Superior Court after pleading guilty to a felony count of criminal threats, according to a District Attorney’s Office news release.
The 54-year-old victim in the case had been living with Fred and her boyfriend, who also was the victim’s son, according to the release. There had been disputes in the past between the victim and Fred regarding the victim moving out.
The victim said Fred had been drinking heavily on Oct. 10, when Fred was said to have retrieved a knife from the kitchen, threatening to kill her and her Chihuahua, according to the release.
At one point Fred was said to have grabbed the Chihuahua, attempting to cut the dog’s throat, according to the release. The victim, however, was able to maintain hold of the dog and ran to the bathroom to call 9-1-1.
Neither the victim nor the Chihuahua was harmed during the incident, according to the release.
Fred was said to have told the Butte County Probation Department that she couldn’t remember the incident because she had been drinking heavily, according to the release. She was said to be remorseful.
“Judge James Reilley stated in court that he was granting formal probation to Fred due to her minimal criminal history, early admission of guilt, remorsefulness, and willingness to comply with the terms and conditions of formal probation, which include completing a residential alcohol treatment program,” according to the release.
Fred also is barred from living with anyone who owns or possesses dogs, according to the release.
Fred remained in custody at Butte County Jail to serve the remainder of her jail time.
