GEORGIA -- Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies shot three dogs that attacked them in north Forsyth on Monday while arresting their owner on various drug charges.
According to the sheriff’s office, the incident happened about 4:30 p.m. at a home on Parks Road.
Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the agency, said 47-year-old Leigh Ann Kennedy reportedly attempted to hide drugs as her three pit bulls attacked two deputies.
The deputies, one of whom received puncture wounds, were “forced to shoot the dogs,” Rodriguez said.
“All three dogs were taken for medical treatment to a local veterinarian by the [sheriff’s office] animal control unit,” he added.
The dog that bit the deputy was euthanized due to its injuries. The other two were treated and are being quarantined at the county animal shelter, according to Rodriguez.
The injured deputy was treated at and released from an area hospital.
Kennedy could not provide deputies with proof of rabies shots for the dogs, Rodriguez said.
Kennedy, who has no relevant criminal history, was taken into custody without further incident.
She has been charged with possession with intent to distribute: methylphenidate, a schedule II controlled substance; alprazolam and tramadol, both schedule IV controlled substances; and marijuana.
She also was charged with possession of: amphetamine; more than one ounce of marijuana; and drug-related objects.
She is being held without bond in the Forsyth County Jail.
