Matthew Matherson, 28, charged with animal cruelty arrested again for violating probation

ALABAMA -- A man arrested last week for animal cruelty after a malnourished horse died has been arrested again for violating his probation.

Matthew Matherson, 28, of Moundville had been previously charged in a domestic violence case, and his arrest on the animal cruelty charge violated his probation, according to Hale County District Attorney Michael Jackson. Matherson is once again in jail.

After police said his malnourished horse did in Greensboro, Matherson was arrested on Oct. 30 and bonded out. The case sparked an internal investigation with a Hale County deputy who residents said didn’t do enough to help the horse.

The horse, named Leo, was brought to a veterinarian's farm last weekend after investigators said Matherson had neglected him for some time.

Several residents said they called the sheriff's office and a deputy for three months, trying to get Leo some help. They claim nothing was done.

After Nancy Weart heard about the horse's condition, she came to be by his side, still trying to get help until the end on Sunday afternoon.

"Just prayed over him…just hugged on him…We were talking to the horse and just rubbing him and he took his last breath. His eyes rolled back into his head and he stiffed up and he passed away," she said.

Weart said if people indeed have been calling for three months, she feels Leo would have survived if authorities had done something.

The sheriff's office says additional charges could be forthcoming for Matherson.

The internal investigation will determine if policy and procedure were followed by the deputy in the case.
