North Carolina: Robert Gnan charged with cruelty to animals after bear, dog shot

NORTH CAROLINA -- A man is charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals after authorities say he admitted to shooting a hunting dog, which later died.

It happened off of N.C. Highway 102 near Pollard Road in Beaufort County over the weekend.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says Robert John Gnan of Greenville admitted that he shot a bear and a hunting dog that ran into the woods chasing it.

The dog's owner, Billy Waters, told police that the GPS tracker on the dog's collar showed the dog not moving and that's when he and the other hunters went into the woods and found Waters' dog next do a dead bear. Waters said he shot his dog to kill it.

I guess he didn't want to bother rushing the dog to a vet. Collateral damage, he's got more dogs, right?

Gnan and James Preece, the land owner where the incident took place, also face charges from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission because it was discovered that had put processed food products (such as store-bought donuts) out to attract the bear, which is illegal.

Dog fighting is illegal but the hunting lobbyists insist that it's not cruel, it's "tradition" to use dogs to exhaust and animal, drag it to the ground, maul it, attack it and kill it if you don't stroll up in time to put a bullet in it.

Luckily, though, there are only about seven ignorant, backwards states left that still allow the use of dogs to chase, maul and kill animals.
