Several injured when monkey escapes in TX

TEXAS -- It’s something you don’t hear about every day - a monkey on the run in the suburbs..

“It was gone wild. Monkey gone wild,” said Andy Silva, a Harlingen resident.

According to police, the monkey  escaped from a home Wednesday afternoon.

One neighbor captured it on cell phone video after it ran into her home and ate whatever it could find. Including Andy Silva.

Silva saw people struggling to get the monkey back to its owner.

“I saw a monkey running around, so I don’t know where it came from, but I just helped them out,” Silva said. “Got bit, so...Yeah, in my finger, and I got a little bit clashed up, but it’s not much. It’s all right.”

Silva and another person weren’t seriously hurt, but an 84-year-old woman was transported to a nearby hospital after being attacked by the monkey. There is no word yet on the extent of her injuries.

The owners of the home where it’s believed the monkey was living would not speak on camera, but police said they believe the monkey was a pet living in a cage in the backyard.

According to Texas law, certain types of monkeys are legal to own, with a permit.

For now, this one is in the custody of animal control.
