Ohio: Sophia Applegate faces animal cruelty charges in the starvation death of three horses

OHIO -- The Geauga Humane Society is pressing charges against a Chardon woman in the death of three horses, which officials say were starved.

Rescue Village Executive Director Hope Brustein called the deaths "one of the worst cases of abuse I have even encountered."

Despite the excellent care provided, the horse died

Sophia Applegate is scheduled to be arraigned in Chardon Municipal Court on Nov. 30. She faces three counts of animal cruelty, a misdemeanor.

"Those animals did not have to die," Brustein said. "If someone would have just called us sooner, we could have saved them."

The sheriff's office called the humane society after receiving a complaint that three animals were being neglected.

When humane officers arrived, one animal was already dead. The surviving horses were taken into protective custody and treated for malnourishment.

Despite around-the-clock care by two equine veterinarians and volunteers of the Humane Society, a 4-year-old mare named Rose died last month. The third animal, a 7-year-old male called Pascal, died last week.

All animals' health is rated from 1 to 9 when they are brought to the shelter. Both animals were assessed at 1.

"By the time we got to them, the question was simply whether or not we could save them," said Brustein.

The mare became so weak she couldn't stand without assistance. Members of the Russell Fire Department rigged a harness to help her stand.

"This case has just broken so many of us," Brustein said. "In this case, everyone working with them went to heroic measures and we still lost them."

Brustein stressed that if owners are in trouble, they should call for help. "

A fund has been set up to help off-set the cost of the medical care of Rose and Pascal. If you would like to donate to "Project Save," you can do so on-line or donations can be sent to Project Save, 15463 Chillicothe Road, Russell, Ohio 44072.
