Sparta police chief is on paid leave for shooting dog instead of taking it to shelter

MISSOURI -- The Sparta police chief is on paid administrative leave after admitting he shot a dog.

Many who showed up at the City Council meeting on Tuesday night want him fired for shooting and killing a family dog.

Chief Andrew Spencer responded to a call about a loose pit bull terrier.  Instead of taking it to a shelter, he shot and killed the dog.

The incident happened two weeks ago.  Spencer said he had no other choice because he was called to a crash near Sparta High School.

The city attorney says the chief violated city code. Those wanting justice for Chase called on state Rep. Lynn Morris.

"A person who could be mean or kill an animal doesn't need to be a person who takes care of people."

According to Sparta city code, the dog should have been held for five days to give authorities time to find the owners.

Aldermen could meet next week to discuss a possible punishment.
