Woman videotaped dragging her cat on a leash

TENNESSEE -- Knox County Animal Control said they have located a Gatlinburg woman who was reported dragging a cat on a leash through Knoxville’s West Town Mall and the Knoxville VA clinic on Thursday.

Video and photos of the woman were posted to Facebook. Witnesses said the woman dragged the cat around for several hours. When animal control arrived, she didn’t want to talk to them, but did tell them the cat was a service animal for post traumatic stress disorder, then drove off.

Authorities were able to locate the woman after another incident on Friday at the Knoxville VA clinic involving the cat.

“Disturbing. I don’t think it’s right that someone would force the cat to do something beyond it’s will,” said Knoxville resident Elizabeth Bartlett, who watched the video.

“She may think it’s cute. I don’t think that cat thought it was cute,” said Mary Underwood.

“It was completely the wrong thing to do to the cat. The cat was totally stressed out. It needed to picked up, loved on, held,” said Cassie Johnson, who manages Pet Supplies Plus.

She says they sell a lot of cat leashes and harnesses at the pet supply store. But explains that it’s only ethical to use them in certain situations.

“For people that live in apartments to take their cat outside so they don’t run off. Other than that they don’t need to be on a harness or a leash,” Johnson added.

Officers said the cat has been sent to Young-Williams Animal Shelter and the woman is getting the help she needs.
