GEORGIA -- Animal Control removed 79 dogs and cats from a south Bibb County home Tuesday afternoon, according to the county director of Animal Welfare Sonja Adams.
It happened at 4080 Worsham Ave., according to Deputy Clay Williams of the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
He said the homeowners, Dennis and Peggy Hastings, were working with Bibb County Animal Welfare to rescue animals and find them new homes. But the situations got out of control, Williams said.
"The gentleman claims to be trying to assist in rescuing the animals," Williams told The Telegraph. He said most of the dogs are smaller breeds.
Neighbors complained about the smell of feces and urine, he said.
Officers said found the animals in "deplorable living conditions," in the couple's 1,000-square-foot home.
"It's a typical house of 79 animals living in there. Its filled with feces, urine, trash, roaches, mice you name it, it's in there," Adams said.
She said that most of the animals left with a rescue they were already working with, and there is no need to worry about overcrowding at the shelter.
"We are taking in a certain number of animals tonight however those animals will be leaving in the next couple of days, so by no means is it going to affect any of the animals at our shelter currently," Adams said.
According to a news release, deputies arrested the couple for felony animal cruelty and transported them to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.
