UNITED KINGDOM -- A British woman has been banned from keeping pets after she abandoned her starving dog inside a filthy home.
Sarah Thackery cruelly left the Rottweiler living in its own waste with no food or water in Huddersfield, England.
Shocked staff at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) said the dog was living in some of the worst conditions they had ever seen.
The pet had only a stained duvet to sleep on in the house, which had been left in a disgusting state and was strewn with garbage.
“There was a horrendous smell,” said Andrew Davidson, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA. "There were mounds of rubbish, overflowing bin bags and there was no food or water for the dog. The curtains had been chewed and there was a thick layer of hair covering the carpets which had not been cleaned for some time.”
When authorities investigated, Thackery was nowhere to be found and in March, the pet was found sitting on a feces and urine stained duvet, according to Mirror Online.
Thackery pleaded guilty to two charges under the Animal Welfare Act of failing to ensure the needs of the dog were met.
She claimed that she loved her pet but had been under “extreme stress” at the time.
The dog has since been rehomed and Thackery has been banned from keeping animals for 10 years.
She was given a two-year conditional discharge and told to pay $380 towards prosecution costs.
