TEXAS -- An 8 p.m. call Saturday to the Bartlett Police Department reported two dogs, identified as pit bulls, attacked a donkey at a property inside the Bartlett city limits, a news release said Tuesday.
Bartlett Animal Control Officer David Brittain went to the scene and found the donkey was in severe distress and suffering. The decision was made between veterinarian Dr. Amanda Kowalski, who came to the location at 419 Kimbell to address the emergency situation, and the donkey’s owner to euthanize it to end its suffering.
“This is an ongoing investigation by the city of Bartlett and the animal control officer, so I’m not at liberty to comment,” Kowalski, a Belton Veterinary Clinic veterinarian, said Tuesday.
The two dogs were captured. Police department records showed the pit bulls attacked several animals before the donkey incident and no vaccination records were found, Brittain said.
The dogs were euthanized and their remains sent for rabies testing, which is required by state law.
“They were just doing what was humane to keep the donkey from suffering,” Bartlett Mayor pro tem Barbara Sandobal said Tuesday. The donkey had a torn trachea and esophagus.
“People have gotten in the habit of letting their dogs run loose and it’s gotten unsafe. More than one dog is a pack, and the dogs are running in packs. What if this had been children? The dogs should be home where they are fed regularly and maybe things like this wouldn’t happen,” Sandobal said.
The incident is an ongoing investigation and no more information will be released yet, Bartlett Police Chief Markus Holt said.
