Grand Jury indicts St. Matthews horse farmer Ronald Lee Hevener, 64

SOUTH CAROLINA -- A grand jury has indicted a St. Matthews man on five counts of ill-treatment of animals (aka animal cruelty).

Ronald Lee Hevener, 64, of Brigadoon Lane is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 8.

The case against Hevener began in April when someone complained to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office about the conditions of horses at his farm on Doodle Hill Road.

After deputies went to the farm on April 14, Hevener was charged with eight counts of ill-treatment toward animals.

The sheriff’s office at that time advised Hevener to take better care of the horses, warning him that they would revisit his farm.

The deputies returned to the farm the next month, and as a result, Hevener was ordered to surrender 29 horses to authorities.

He was also served with warrants for additional charges of ill-treatment toward animals.

Hevener is scheduled to appear in Calhoun County General Sessions Court on Tuesday of next week.

Although this article does not mention it, apparently he was neglecting his Collie dog as well.
