Mauled poodle a Xmas miracle after she made a full recovery from a brutal dog attack

AUSTRALIA -- WOOLFIE is the Bignell family’s real-life Christmas miracle.

The six-year-old poodle has made a full recovery after a brutal attack in her own home left her clinging to life.

The family pet wasn’t expected to survive after being savagely mauled by four large American Staffordshire terriers (pit bulls) in the Bignell’s Carrara bedroom on October 22.

Owner Barbara Bignell was recovering in bed from a broken leg when the dogs burst into her Hickey Way home and cornered Woolfie.

Husband Greg Bignell was at the shops and returned to find his wife traumatised and Woolfie unconscious and bleeding.

“We thought it was the end for Woolfie,” he said.

“We rushed her to the vet and they told us she didn’t have much chance. She spent more than a week at the vet and endured several surgeries but finally we could bring her home.

“Now she is almost back to herself — it’s been a long way to get here though.”

Mrs Bignell said she couldn’t believe how tough Woolfie was.

“It’s amazing to have her here still. She just received a Christmas card from the vet, calling her the miracle dog and she certainly is that.”

Woolfie’s story touched the Gold Coast community and after her attack made headlines many generous people anonymously donating to fund Woolfie’s recovery.

Mr Bignell said the acts of kindness helped more than people knew.

“The vet bills amounted to thousands — the help we received made such a difference,” he said.

The four dogs had escaped from a yard further down the street and pushed their way inside the Bignell home.

The animals were seized within days of the attack and a council spokesman confirmed all four had been destroyed.

As for the Bignells, they have sold their house and are moving to Hope Island for a new start.

“We are downsizing and look forward to what the new year will bring — with Woolfie by our side,” Mr Bignell said.
