Miniature horse rescued after hooves go untrimmed

OHIO -- Cider the mini-horse is doing better after being rescued and having his hoofs trimmed.

The miniature horse was surrendered to the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals from a southern Ohio farm on Sunday. Cider’s hooves went untrimmed for approximately two years according to Veterinarian Chris Beinlich at Woodland Run Equine Facility. He said the curved hooves were cutting into the skin on Cider’s shins.

“The hooves were digging into the skin and every time he walked it would hurt,” Beinlich said.

Cider was taken to the Equine facility where the veterinarian and his staff used a hacksaw to trim the hooves, so the little horse could walk without pain.

Teresa Landon with the Ohio SPCA said they are preparing the photographs and evidence, such as the veterinarian’s report, that will be presented to the local prosecutor. It will be up to the prosecutor to determine if animal abuse or neglect charges should be filed.

NBC4 is not naming the owner or farm where the horse was seized until charges are decided.

Cider is now owned by the Ohio SPCA and will be up for adoption in two to three months. To contact the Ohio SPCA click on OhioSPCA.org
