Prince George police shoot dog after attack on woman, pet

VIRGINIA -- Prince George County police fatally shot a dog that police say attacked a woman and her small dog Sunday.

The attack happened in a cul-de-sac in the 2000 block of Manitoba Drive as a woman was walking her dog. Police received calls of "a woman screaming and running down the road," at 11:55 a.m., said Lt. John Leach.

A neighbor helped the woman and dog escape by hitting the medium-sized pit bull with a rock. The dog then turned on the neighbor, who was bit on the hands and arms.

Another neighbor stabbed the dog several times with an unknown object before it retreated to the victim's porch.

The incident lasted about two minutes, Leach said.

Shortly after police arrived, the dog attacked an officer, who shot and killed it.

The owner of the dog was located and animal control officers charged the owner with "dog running at large." Other charges were pending, Leach said.

The victim and the first neighbor were treated for minor injuries at the scene and were encouraged to seek medical assistance at a hospital, Leach said. Investigators have no reason to believe the dog had rabies, he added.

The dog that was attacked was transported to an emergency veterinary clinic.
