Texas: Herman Lee Wright, Jr., 35, turns himself in after beating his dog

TEXAS -- A man who had a warrant out for his arrest after video allegedly shows him beating a dog is now in police custody.

Herman Wright, Jr., 35, turned himself in to Corpus Christi Police Friday morning.

On Tuesday, police received several complaints after video of a dog being punched and slammed to the ground was posted on social media.

The video was recorded by a neighbor in the 5300 block of Gateridge, that's near Lipes and Staples.

Once police were made aware of the video they began investigating by talking with witnesses.

Around 6:00 p.m. Tuesday night CCPD and Animal control seized the dog from the home.

The dog, named Missy, was taken to a veterinarian to get checked out and has been under the care of animal control since.

On Thursday night, police were able to get an animal cruelty warrant for Wright's arrest from the Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, Place 2.

Friday morning Wright turned himself in.  Shortly after, he made his first court appearance where a judge formally charged him with cruelty to a non livestock animal.

The judge asked Wright if he needed a court appointed attorney, he said he would get his own attorney.

Wright's bond is set at $2,500. He has bonded out since.

In less than two weeks a custody hearing between animal control and Missy's owner will take place.

If custody of the dog is awarded to animal control the dog will be put up for adoption or Missy could be given to an animal rescue group.
