Three pit bulls attack, kill Yorkie in Cape Coral

FLORIDA -- A Cape Coral woman wants change after her Yorkie was attacked and killed by three large dogs pit bulls.

Mary Benbynek said she was walking her nine-year-old Yorkie, Snickers, when she saw two large dogs force up their gate and knock her down.

"I never dreamed there was third one," said Benbynek, "and there was just nothing I could do."

The third dog grabbed Snickers and mauled him.

Mary quickly rushed him to the vet with a broken back and a cut eye hanging from its socket.

Snickers was euthanized less than an hour later.

"Seeing that dog mauled like that, it was pretty scary," said Raymond Dupont, a neighbor who witnessed the attack. "As far as putting them down, I don't want to see that, but I would like to see them out of the neighborhood. I think they should be taken away and probably find some responsible owners that will take care of them."

This guy is an idiot. Yeah, dump them into another neighborhood your moron. That'll change their killer behavior. They should put these three dogs into his house and see how they behave.

Other neighbors are afraid of what could happen if they ever escape again.

"I feel bad for the dog, but I'm thinking what if somebody else got hurt too?" asked Madison Kozsey. "Could other dogs get hurt, and other people get hurt?"

The dogs' owners weren't up for talking, calling the whole episode an accident before asking us to leave their property.

They did offer to pay for Snickers' vet fees. Fortunately, Mary wasn't hurt, but she does think something needs to be done.

"I think when a number of pit bulls are in a neighborhood, everybody should know or be warned. It will happen again," said Benbynek. "Something will set them off, usually a small animal or someone running. It will set them off again, and if they are out, God only knows what will happen."

Neighbors said that the local animal services department was outside the home of the dog's owners for hours on Monday, but they refused to open the door.

Benbynek has filed a report with the Cape Coral Police Department.
